ICRA is not simply a jobsite checklist — it is a risk management framework that directly affects patient safety, hospital liability exposure and post-installation performance.  ICRA is a process used to evaluate and manage the risk of infection in healthcare settings, particularly during construction or renovation.

Flooring installation in healthcare facilities demands strict environmental controls and documented compliance. These elements should be treated as risk-management decisions and not procurement afterthought. Careful planning is important to protect patients and project stakeholders.  In this context, PPEs, Patient Protective Equipment, is crucial for safeguarding vulnerable individuals. The professionalism, skill and knowledge required for flooring installations in healthcare facilities are especially advanced, as they must adhere to strict infection control standards to ensure patient safety. The installer’s role in maintaining infection control during active healthcare operations must include: 1. Environmental containment, negative air and particulate control requirements; 2. Proper documentation standards required for compliance and warranty protection; 3. Understanding the distinction between PPE and patient-protective infection control barriers.

David Gross is the Executive Director of INSTALL, the flooring industry’s manufacturer-endorsed program for installation training and certification. He brings over 20 years of field experience as an installer, superintendent, estimator and project manager. He previously served eight years as a Level III flooring instructor at the Northeast Carpenters Training Center in New Jersey. David holds a MBA from Pittsburg State University, a BA in economics from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP),and serves as a voting member of ASTM International Committees F06 and F08.
